Penang Road Laksa @ Joo Hooi Cafe

When you talk about Penang Hawker food, Penang laksa is a must. Besides Air Itam market's Laksa, we have the famous Penang Road Laksa which has been around for about 50 years if not mistaken. (My mom used to go there for Laksa with my grandma when she was a child...that was like around the 1960's?)

The shop is extremely crowded last Sunday as it was a public holiday. My bestie from Sarawak was craving for it, thus I brought her and her bf there. ^^ You can see the crowd from a far and people queueing at the cendol stall located beside the cafe.

Anyway, Joo Hooi Cafe (愉园餐室)is the name of the coffee shop where Penang Road Laksa can be found. The name Penang Laksa overshadowed the name of the cafe and people knew about the cafe because of the Laksa. lol

Besides Penang laksa, people also go there for its famous cendol. You can also get Char Koay Tiao and Lor Bak at Joo Hooi Cafe.

The crowded cafe. You need to sit down straight away once you spot an empty table.
No time to hesitate.

The interior of Joo Hooi Cafe. See the yellow board on the left?
It is the Penang Road Laksa stall.

My bowl of Penang Road Laksa @ RM3.50

The broth is made of fish and you can eat it with or without shrimp paste (the black sauce in the spoon)
Onions, lettuce, pineapples and cucumber are added with the laksa noodles before serving it with the spicy aromatic fish soup. Too bad some people can't get used to the heavy smell of the laksa.

My fav bowl of cendol!
Forgotten the price though (around RM2.00++ if not mistaken)
It tastes good because of the coconut milk and gula melaka.
The green green thingy is made of rice floor,
plus the green colour extract of pandan leaves for the colour.
My friend's bf claimed that it is too delicious and couldn't be described upon words. lolz

Joo Hooi Cafe is opened at 12:30pm during lunch time till about 4.00-5.00pm (closed on Wednesday)
You can frequent the cafe during weekdays to avoid the big crowd.

This place is a must when you plan your trip to Penang Island and your trip will not be complete without the Penang Laksa. =)

Food:  9/10  (good laksa and cendol)

Ambiance: 6/10 (old coffee shop...not a place to hang out...except for the food perhaps)
