日野家 ( Hinoya Japanese Restaurant) @ Fushimi Inari, Kyoto, Japan

Visiting the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine, or better known as Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社)  is a must when you visit Kyoto. Based on what I’ve read online, I’ve got to know that the shrine was dedicated to the God of Rice and Sake by the Hata Clan in the late 8th century.

The main attraction of the place is the vibrant coloured orange redish tori gates. Trust me, the view is to die for. One word to describe it: EPIC!

Around the shrines and the shopping street, you will see souvenirs, statues and talisman or lucky charms, which comes in the form of foxes.Foxes do play a pivotal role in olden Japan as they are messenger to the God of Grain ( as in rice, which is the staple food in Asia), Inari Okami.

The main shrine.
It is spectacular under the sun.

Torri gates! My dream comes true at last.
A big fan of J culture, am I?

We spent our morning, being in awe with the torri gates and ancient architectural until our stomach protested. Time for lunch!

We headed to the street using one of the entrance of the shrine, which has a big grey stone torri gate.
Apart from souvenir shops, there are a few restaurants or traditional eateries for you to satisfy your taste buds.

The huge grey torri gate I mentioned.

We went to 日野家 for lunch. Too bad that I can’t remember if the bill display their restaurant in English. Anyway, here are some photos for you to spot the shop.

The road with shops from the shrine.

There are tons of food samples in front of the restaurant.
A unique feature of Japanese restaurants.
To attract the diners I supposed.
They are lovely as well.

Free flow of  Genmaicha (Genmai tea)

Love the taste and it did quench our thirst.
It has a slight bitter sweet taste.
We were like camels which just found
an oasis after a long tiring journey on the dessert,
gulping down all the chilled Genmai tea.

Lemon Kakigoori @ 400 Yen

Shaved ice with lemon syrup.

Shaved ice is extremely popular during the hot summer
and basically, you can get it anywhere in Japan.
We ordered one as we needed some ice
to cool us down.
Plenty of Genmai tea during the meal was not enough.

Refreshing and the serving is rather big.
Too bad we do not have a ravenous appetite,
else, we would be able to sample other flavours.

Kintoki (sweet red beans with syrup) and
Ujikintoki (sweet red beans with green tea syrups) are
available as well.

Dashimaki (Japanese omelette) @ 630 Yen

We ordered the egg roll as well.

Hmm…nothing special about it
and it can be a lil bland.
Just too hungry and we needed more food
to fill in our hungry stomach.

BBQ Quail @ 730 Yen

I tried quail eggs before, but not the bird.
BBQ quail, this is new to me. XD
We saw it outside the restaurant and it
did look delicious.

The meat is not as tender as chicken,
but it is crispy and a lil char.
It doesn’t resemble chicken wings, however
I do like the taste of it with the BBQ sauce.
Something new that you must try,
if you do fancy exotic oriental food.

Tendon (Tempura Rice) @  around 1000 Yen +/-

This is a must try.

The leaf tempura is unique.
(I have no idea what vegetables is that)
You have prawns and assorted vegetables which are crispy.
Tendon is best eaten hot once served.

I miss that right now.
The best tempura is only available at the Land of the
Rising Sun. Too bad.

Unadon (BBQ eel rice) @ 1350 Yen +/-

This is surprisingly good.
I dislike unagi rice or unagi sushi since I’ve tried
some in the Japanese and fusion restaurant
here which has a fishy smell.

This unagi rice did change my mind.
It is sweet and fresh.
The sauce is good and the it is indeed appetising.
Unagi fans shouldn’t miss it!

Pickles are served with the rice.

The dining area.

Façade of the restaurant.
Maybe you can try to locate the Kanji

at the entrance “日野家

Maybe anyone is able to give me more info
regarding this restaurant?

We didn’t try the Inari sushi as we have it here at our local sushi restaurant. Perhaps you should try inari sushi (which is tried tofu skin wrapped with sushi rice inside) as fried tofu is believed to be the favourite food of the foxes. ^^ They have set meals and udon as well.

Traditional restaurant, good food, great company and an enchanted shrine, it did make my day. ^^

Food: 8/10 ( What can I say more? They are simply delectable and irresistible)

Ambiance: 8/10 (Clean and nostalgic, you can opt to seat on the floor ala Japanese style)
