Metal Caricature @ George Town, Penang

I’m proud to be a Penangite.

Penang is a beautiful state which is famous for its local food, as well as its beautiful heritage buildings.
To commemorate Penang’s George Town’s status as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, numerous interesting art projects can be spotted around the area.

My friends and I managed to find a few metal caricature sculptures during our trip. They are cool as the caricatures and descriptions on them managed to introduce the history of the community to the people. It is a great way to preserve the rich culture of the local community.

"Bullock Cart Wheel" on Pitt Street
(Opposite the magnificent St. George's Anglican Church)

This is because Bullock Cart Wheel used to park on that area during the
early 20th Century. XP

St. Georges Anglican Church
(between Pitt Street and Lebuh Farquhar)

It is the oldest Anglican Church in South East Asia.

"Tok Tok Mee" Sculpture on China Street

(You can see it clearly opposite the lane beside
 the Goddess of Mercy Temple)

My fav sculpture as it is dedicated to my fav local noodles
Tok Tok Mee! (The Wan Tan Noodles)

This is the way it used to sell in the olden days.
My late grandma used to tell me about that.

Tok! Tok! Tok!
Ouch...my head!!!!!

"Cheating Husband" on Love Lane

This can be seen opposite the 2 phone booth with broken
heart murals on Love Lane.

According to the description, the local Chinese rich men used to keep
their mistress on the houses here, that's why the name "Love Lane"
exist today. Can be known as Sai Cheng Hang (mistress lane in Cantonese
if not mistaken XP)

"One Leg Kicks All" on Muntri Street

It is used to remember the Cantonese maids, known as the Amah who
used to don in white blouse and black long pants while
working for the rich of the olden days.

"Win Win Situation" on Muntri Street

The caricature is to commemorate the tin trade of Ngah Ibrahim and the
Chinese Merchant ( Ops...forgotten my Malaysian history)

"Too Narrow" on Soo Hong Lane

Lolz...the man's ricksaw
on the narrowest street of George Town

 "Procession" on Armenian Street

( beside the "Old Man" mural by Ernest Zacharevic)

It is used to remember the grand Tua Pek Kong procession in year 1926.
It is near the Tua Pek Kong Temple if not mistaken.

"Wrong Tree" sculpture on Market Lane

It is a sculpture on the entrance of a toddy shop.
Toddy (known as Tuak by the locals) is an alcoholic beverage which is made
by using underdeveloped flower of the coconut palm.

It is kinda scary to snap this photo as I can see some drunkards around. O.o

"Jimmy Choo" on  Muntri Street

This is a good one which dedicates to one of the world's renowned
shoe designer, Dato' Jimmy Choo!

He begin is apprenticeship in shoe making at Hong Kong Shoe Store of Muntri Street.

I'm proud to be a Penangite! X3

"Narrowest Five Foot Way" on Steward Lane

There are five metal caricature on the colums of the
five foot way and five different characters can be seen.

From left to righ: An Indian dhoby with a laundry basket, A Chinese house maid
(known as the Amah in the olden days), a small running child, a worker
(Kuli, I guess) and an English man saying "Obviously this is less than five feet".

Exploring the heritage zone is amazing as you only need to equip yourself a pair of comfortable walking shoes (my good old Adidas did the trick), a cap and a camera.
The caricatures are interesting and you can learn a lot about Penang while having fun posing and taking goofy photos with friends. lolz

I'll explore George Town once again and hopefully I will snap more photos. X3

I would like to thank the awesome artists ( Baba Chuah, Lefty, Reggie Lee and Tang Mun Kian) for their creativity.

Penang rocks!
